RESUMEN:

Identifying the key determinants of business sustainability has become a strategic priority for micro and small enterprises (MSEs), particularly in contexts where empirical management practices predominate. In San Martín Texmelucan, Puebla, MSEs engaged in commerce and textile manufacturing constitute an important source of employment and economic development; however, they face limitations related to strategic planning, innovation, management capabilities, and the adoption of sustainable practices. The objective of this study was to identify the economic, social, environmental, and organizational factors that influence the sustainability of MSEs in the municipality.

The study adopted a qualitative documentary approach with a descriptive and analytical scope. The PRISMA methodology was applied to perform a systematic literature review of scientific studies on business sustainability, competitiveness, and MSE management. The search and selection process was carried out in recognized academic databases, considering recent publications and sources with high scientific rigor.

The results indicate that business sustainability depends on the interaction of four key dimensions: economic, social, environmental, and organizational. The most relevant factors identified include strategic planning, administrative training, access to financing, technological innovation, organizational culture, social responsibility, and environmental management. Furthermore, the findings reveal that empirical management practices limit firms’ ability to adapt to dynamic and competitive environments, whereas management professionalization strengthens business continuity and competitiveness.

The study concludes that the sustainability of MSEs does not depend solely on economic performance but on the balanced integration of organizational, social, and environmental factors. The adoption of sustainable strategies and the strengthening of managerial capabilities are essential elements for enhancing competitiveness and promoting sustainable business development in the local context.
